Seminar on Ports of India: Then and Now by Maritime History Society

A seminar on Ports of India: Then and Now is being conducted by the Maritime History Society (MHS) at INHS Asvini Auditorium, near RC Church, Colaba, Mumbai on 06 and 07 October 2016. This year the Annual Seminar takes a historical overview of Indian ports.

During the Inaugural Session, Vice Admiral Girish Luthra, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Western Naval Command made opening remarks highlighting the increased activity in the port sector in India today. Modern India has 13 Major and about 200 minor ports dotting its 7500 Km coastline. He said that Cargo handling capacity of Indian ports is increasing at a rapid pace and the road and rail connectivity to our ports need immediate focus to ensure balanced development. Shri Deepak Shetty, DG shipping, delivered the Keynote Address during the inaugural session and brought out the developments in the shipping regulatory framework of the country.

The Indian coastline is dotted with Ports that have a significant legacy. These Ports are set to enable the nation witness a maritime resurgence, through initiatives such as “Sagarmala”. A similar prospect exists in the island territories and even in the offshore sector and the Riverine dimension. Therefore it is important to see the historical journey of Indian Ports to understand the emerging development of India as a maritime power through the story of her Ports. A set of 18 young maritime professionals are presenting together ten papers in four Sessions over two days. A number of people involved and interested in maritime history are expected to attend the seminar these include students from local schools, Merchant Navy cadets, representatives from various departments of the Government and officers and sailors of Indian Navy. Shri Sanjay Bhatia, Chairman Mumbai Port trust will give the Valedictory Address at the concluding session on 07 October 16. The Society will subsequently bring out a compendium of the papers presented and the discussions.

The Society came into being on 12 May 1978 with the aim of promoting the study of our maritime history and enhancing an awareness of our maritime heritage among the youth. The MHS has been organizing Seminars and Talks on India’s Maritime Heritage and related subjects of interest. It periodically sponsors research projects on Maritime History. The Society reached a milestone when its first publication Essays in Maritime Studies was released on 30 Mar 98. From those modest forays in publishing, the society has now published a total of twenty books on maritime history.
