INA won the Bakshi Cup for the first time since its inception in early 1960s
The Indian Naval Academy (INA) won the prestigious annual Inter Services Officers Training Academies sports meet, the Bakshi Cup 2017, held at the National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakvasla from 23rd to 26th March 2017. This is the first time INA has won the Bakshi Cup since its inception.

Bakshi Cup is an annual Inter Services sports meet for trainees of six premier Officers Training Academies, viz., National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakvasla, the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun, Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala, Air Force Academy (AFA), Dundigul, Officers' Training Academy (OTA), Chennai and Officers' Training Academy (OTA), Gaya.
The Deputy Commandant and Chief Instructor, Rear Admiral MD Suresh, NM addressed the cadets, highlighting the importance of this maiden win towards bringing INA - a relatively new academy an institution - at par with the older and more well known academies like NDA and IMA
The sports meet dates back to early 1960s, when Major General Ranbir Bakshi, then Commandant of the National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakvasla, instituted the event to be contested between the NDA and the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun. The INA was included as the third participant in 2013, followed by AFA, OTA Chennai and OTA Gaya.

57 Cadets of INA participated in six sporting events viz. Basketball, Football, Volleyball, Tennis, Squash and Cross Country. The cadets of INA won both Cross Country and Basketball and were the runners up in Football and Volley Ball. In a clean sweep, INA cadets won the gold, silver and bronze medals in Cross country. In the overall positions, INA won the Bakshi Cup 2017 with a score of 50 points, with the runners up NDA, followed by IMA, OTA Chennai, AFA and OTA Gaya in third, fourth, fifth and sixth positions respectively.

The triumphant INA team was given a rousing reception upon its arrival at INA, on 28 March 2017. Amid scenes of jubilation and loud cheers from thousands of trainee cadets, the team accompanied by the coaches, waved to the cheering crowds from an open top motorcade as the procession began from the Payyanur Gatetowards Chola stadium, where the INA officials had organised a gala felicitation in honour of the victorious cadets.

A celebratory mood prevailed at the Chola stadium, where an enthusiastic crowd - mostly trainee cadets, officers and sailors of INA and their families - gathered, amidst the music of the Naval band and recounting of experiences by the mentor officers of each team, making the event a memorable one. The Deputy Commandant and Chief Instructor, Rear Admiral MD Suresh, NM addressed the cadets, highlighting the importance of this maiden win towards bringing INA - a relatively new academy an institution - at par with the older and more well known academies like NDA and IMA. The event concluded with a cake cutting and celebratory music performance by INA's cadet band 'Flashpoint'.
