INS Sunayna Seizes Arms and Ammunition Off the Somali Coast

Indian Naval Ship Sunayna while deployed for anti piracy patrol in the Gulf of Aden detected a few suspicious boats approximately 400 nautical miles North East of Mogadishu, off the coast of Somalia, on 09 November 2018. Upon investigation, the boats were found to be carrying one AK-47 and AKMS rifle each, ammunition, magazines, grapnels used for boarding ships and oil drums and the absence of fishing equipment. The boats and crew were released post interrogation and the weapons confiscated to prevent their illegal use by the crew for piracy related activities. Towards upholding its commitment of maintaining peace and maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region, the Indian Navy, as the Net Security Provider, maintains one ship permanently deployed in the area encompassing the Bab-el-Mandeb, the Gulf of Aden and off the coast of Somalia.
