Vice Admiral Anil Kumar Chawla, AVSM, NM, VSM
Vice Admiral Anil Kumar Chawla, AVSM, NM, VSM has assumed command as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command on 31 July 2018.
The Admiral is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy and joined the academy in January 1978. On completion of his Midshipman training he was awarded the `Sword of Honour’ for being the outstanding midshipman of his course. Commissioned in the Indian Navy on 01 January 1982, he specialised in Navigation and Direction in 1988 and subsequently navigated two of the Navy’s frontline frigates. Vice Admiral Chawla has commanded five front line Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard ships including the Aircraft Carrier INS Viraat.
His prominent ashore and staff appointments include a stint as an instructor at the National Defence Academy, Deputy Director of the Navy’s Centre for Leadership and Behavioural Studies, Defence Attaché at the Embassy of India, Jakarta, Senior Instructor (Navy) at the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington and Naval Assistant to CNS. He was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral in August 2010 and was appointed as the Assistant Chief of the Naval Staff (Foreign Cooperation & Intelligence) followed by a long tenure as Assistant Chief of the Naval Staff (Policy and Plans) at Naval Headquarters, where he handled the budget and acquisitions of the Indian Navy. He then commanded the Western Fleet, the Sword Arm of the Indian Navy, from 16 August 2013 to 01 October 2014. On promotion to the rank of Vice Admiral in December 2014, he was appointed as the Director General Naval Operations. Before the present appointment, he was posted at Naval Headquarters as the Chief of Personnel. He was also the Chairman Principal Personnel Officers’ Committee (PPOC).
Vice Admiral Chawla has attended the Royal Naval Staff Course at Greenwich (UK), the Naval Higher Command Course and the 48th NDC course.
He participated in Operation Pawan in 1988-89, where he was commended by FOC-in-C East. He was awarded the Nausena Medal in 2003 while in command of INS Kora during Operation Parakram, Vishisht Seva Medal in 2013 and the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2015.
