Exercise Prasthan Conducted in Western Offshore Development Area Under Aegis of  the Western Naval Command, Mumbai

Offshore Security exercise, code-named ‘Prasthan’ was conducted in the Offshore Development Area (ODA) off Mumbai on 24 December 2018, under the aegis of Headquarters Western Naval Command. This exercise, which is conducted every six months, aims to integrate all maritime stakeholders including the Indian Navy, Indian Air Force, Coast Guard, Oil Handling Agencies, Port Trust, Customs, State fisheries department and Marine Police towards refining SOPs for response to various offshore contingencies that could occur in the ODAs.

The exercise was conducted on an offshore platform, located about 50 nautical miles west of Mumbai. Contingencies such as collision of an adrift vessel with an oil platform, fire on an oil platform, oil spill and polution control, casualty evacuation from the ODA and Search and Rescue for an overboard crew were exercised. In addition, anti-hijacking drill and bomb disposal exercise were conducted wherein Marine Commandos and Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team of Indian Navy were slithered on the platform from helicopters. Exercise provided a realistic scenario for all stakeholders to assess readiness to respond to contingencies in the Western ODA, as also to operate together in a coordinated manner.
