Information Technology in Indian Navy

Overview

Indian Navy has been the fore runner in harnessing the power of Information Technology, both in Operational and Administrative functions. The initiatives ensuring Desktop-to-Desktop connectivity across geographically dispersed locations over a Unified Domain, Integrated Applications and robust Security Mechanisms have in true sense ensured that the benefits of IT percolate down to the last user.

Infrastructure - Indian Navy’s IT Network provides end-to-end desktop connectivity across geographically dispersed areas. State-of-the-Art Data centers and Network Operation Centers have been set-up for up-keep, maintenance & close monitoring of IT assets.

IT Enablers The objective of an IT enabled Navy has been achieved through the following:-

  • State-of-the-Art-Networks
  • Integration of legacy applications.
  • Automation of core administrative functions by various stake holders in the field of :-
    • Personnel Management
    • Material Management
    • Pay & Allowance
    • Health Care
  • Manpower Training.

Training

To maintain and support IT infrastructure and operations, multilevel training is imparted to Naval personnel at premier institutes within the navy. Specialised training and PG courses are also conducted at IITs and other institutes of repute. Some of the prominent training opportunities for officers are as given below:-

  • M Tech from IITs
  • Specialisation courses on Cyber Security at IITs/ Leading Institutes.
  • Service specific courses at premier Naval Training Establishments.

Career & Opportunities

Indian Navy provides excellent career opportunities in the field of IT. Personnel gain hands-on experience in operations, maintenance and administration of core IT infrastructure and applications. They are also exposed to R & D functions as part of standard growth profile. Naval IT setup is unique since it involves not only shore based establishments but also afloat units, which require to maintain connectivity and synchronized operations.

The IT qualified officers being inducted in the Navy, as Short Service Commission Officers SSC (X/IT) would form the core of IT operations and handle critical IT infrastructure / applications. Their charter of duties includes following:-

  • Implementation of Enterprise wide networking & software development projects
  • Management of critical Naval Networks and Software Applications.
  • Administration of shore and on-board networks.
  • Development activities with respect to cyber security products.
