“India as a 21st Century Power- The Maritime Dimension” was the topic of the maiden Admiral RL Pereira Memorial Lecture delivered by Admiral (Retd) Arun Prakash, former Chief of the Indian Navy on 22 May 13 at MEG Auditorium, Bengaluru. The event held in honour of late Admiral RL Pereira, a former Navy Chief, was conducted under the aegis of Navy Foundation Bengaluru Chapter and was attended by a host of dignitaries, defence analysis and security experts.

In his inaugural address Admiral DK Joshi, Chief of the Naval Staff, appreciated the initiative taken by Cmde (Retd) Ray D'Souza and his team from Navy Foundation Bengaluru Chapter and urged them to continue the good work of looking after the welfare of veterans and widows in the region, whilst promising full support from Delhi.

Navy Foundation is a secular and non - political organisation having its apex body at Delhi. It is headed by the Chief of the Naval Staff and presently has 15 branches across the country and is actively involved in the welfare of naval veterans and their widows. It also carries out activities aiming to create greater awareness in the public mind about Navy and maritime matters.

Admiral RL Pereira was the one of the most admired Navy Chiefs. He was a great soldier and had taken part in various naval operations starting from the early days in World War II until his retirement in 1982. He is considered as one of the architects of today’s Navy. During his tenure in the National Defence Academy, Khadakvasla, he also played a major role in shaping the future leaders of all the three armed forces. He is revered by his former cadets, as an outstanding leader who led by personal example, whilst always being mindful of the well being of his subordinates.
