Vice Admiral Ajit Kumar P, AVSM, VSM
An alumni of the National Defence Academy, the Flag Officer was commissioned in the Indian Navy on 01 July 1981. A specialist in Missiles & Gunnery, the Flag Officer has had extensive operational tenures onboard frontline warships of the IN. His first Command assignment was overseas on deputation to the Mauritian Coast Guard where he commanded two patrol vessels over a period of two and a half years. Other seagoing Command tenures include six seagoing platforms, the guided missile corvette Kulish (Commissioning), guided missile frigate Talwar, guided missile destroyers Mumbai and Mysore. The officer has done the Naval Higher Command Course and is also an alumni of the Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island, USA (Class of 2004). His important shore/ staff assignments include Director Maritime Warfare Centre, Visakhapatnam, Commanding Officer of INS Dronacharya, Kochi and Chief Staff Officer (Operations) of the Western Naval Command, Mumbai.
He was promoted to Flag Rank in September 2009 and as a Rear Admiral, his assignments included Assistant Chief of Personnel (Human Resources Development), IHQ of MoD (Navy), Flag Officer Commanding, Eastern Fleet and Chief of Staff of Southern Naval Command. On promotion to the Rank of Vice Admiral on 01 December 2013, he was appointed as the Commandant of the Indian Naval Academy and thereafter held appointment of Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (Operations) followed by Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (Policy Planning & Force Development), both at the HQ IDS. He assumed charge as Vice Chief of the Naval Staff on 30 October 2017.
He is married to Mrs. Sunita Kumar and has one daughter. His interests primarily lie in reading and yoga.
