PO 'Q' HY Course

PO 'Q' HY Course

This is the highest level of course in professional hydrography for sailors. The course is affiliated to Cochin University of Science and Technology for the Award of Diploma In Hydrographic Surveying depending on the eligibility and enrolment of the candidates with the University. PO 'Q' SR course is conducted every year starting from end August and is of 18 weeks duration.
The pre course requisite is

  • Successful completion of LS SR 'Q' course
  • One year of service as a Leading Seaman.
  • 5 years sea experience in Hydrographic surveying.

The Course Content

  • Computers and networking and security
  • Digital Surveying and Processing Systems
  • Hydrographic Practice
  • Hydrographic Control
  • Ancillary Hydrography comprising
    • Tides and Oceanography
    • Stores Administration and Teaching Technique

Three weeks of dedicated field training phase besides the practical training conducted thrice a week throughout the theoretical phase of training.
The institute also offers a distance learning package for Survey Recorder Class II course

LS 'Q' HY Course

This is the intermediate course in professional hydrography for sailors. LS SR 'Q' course is conducted twice every year starting from mid Mar and mid Sep. Duration of the course is 08 weeks.
The pre course requisite is

  • Successful completion of Basic 'Q' course
  • One year of service as Seaman I Class
  • 01 year sea experience in Hydrographic surveying.

  • Hydrographic Practice
  • Tides and basic Oceanography

Basic 'Q'  HY Course

This is the entry level course in professional hydrography for sailors. It is a 24 weeks course starting in the early February every year.

The pre course requisite is

  • i. Successful completion of basic training at INS Chilka and afloat attachment or Completion of initial training and minimum two years sea time in own country.
  • ii. Completion of basic seamanship training.

The Subjects are:

  • Basic Mathematics
  • Technical Orientation (Basic Electronics)
  • Practical Communication Training
  • Computers and digital surveying and processing systems
  • Hydrographic Practice
  • Hydrographic Control
  • Ancillary Hydrography comprising
  • Tides and Oceanography
  • Stores Administration and Teaching Technique

Includes 2 weeks of dedicated field training phase which has one week ashore and one week afloat field training. This is besides the afternoon practical training conducted thrice a week throughout the theoretical phase of training.

Electronic Survey Equipment Orientation Course

This is a specialisation course in Electronic Survey Equipments for sailors. It is a 06 weeks course. The entry level qualifications required for this course is 10 + 2 or its equivalent with Physics and Mathematics from a recognised board and at least two years of experience in hydrographic surveying.

  • Underwater Equipment
  • Position Fixing System
  • Automated Data Logging System
  • Basic Computers
  • Setting up and maintenance of all Electronic Survey Equipments
