A Humane Touch From the Navy

As a precursor to Navy Day 2019, a series of community outreach activities in the form of services to various orphanages and destitute homes were conducted by naval personnel under the aegis of Southern Naval Command (SNC) from 30 October to 02 November 2019, during which the School for Naval Airmen in coordination with Naval Wives Welfare Association (Southern Region) reached out to the Crescent Girls Home and Nandhanam Balasadanam at Mattancherry, St Agnes Old Age Home at Chullickal, Matra Chayya at Kalady and Government Old Age Home at Thevara.

The activity at each venue included a clean-up drive by naval personnel as well as maintenance activities such as painting of the premises and repair of toilet facilities and furniture. Naval families also donated essential amenities like water purifier, cooking gas range, DVD player, washing machine and groceries. Essential medical aid like wheelchairs and medico-bed as well as adult diapers and first aid kits were distributed to the old age homes while clothes and sports gear like footballs, board games, etc were distributed to the orphanages, in an effort to bring some cheer to their lives. Telegames  for children was the  highlight to the activities at orphanage which saw huge participation, by one and all. A Plantation drive was also conducted to mark the occasion.

The aim of the outreach was to render assistance to the lesser privileged sections of the society. The activity was a humbling and a gratifying experience for all naval personnel who were involved with the appreciation and smiles by inmates of the orphanages and shelter homes the most cherished reward.

Navy Day is celebrated on 4th December every year and as a run up to it, SNC undertakes numerous outreach activities towards assisting the lesser privileged sections of the society.
