Hand Holding of Senior Citizens at Cheriya Kadamakudi

Vice Admiral AK Chawla, AVSM, NM, VSM, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command, and Mrs Sapana Chawla, President, Navy Wives Welfare Association (NWWA), Southern Naval Command, visited Cheriya Kadamakkudi, Kochi on 11 December 2018, as the culminating event of the Navy Day activities. They were accompanied by other senior officers and members of NWWA.

During the visit, the FOC-in-C reviewed the progress of the three houses under reconstruction by Southern Naval Command, at a cost of Rs 23 lakhs as part of the rehabilitation activities announced by the Chief of the Naval Staff in August 2018, in the aftermath of the Kerala Floods. The FOC-in-C also gifted wooden cots to 30 aged residents of the village and the balance 26 will get the same in the next few days. The children of the village had more reason to cheer, as a Children’s Park, with modern play equipments, was inaugurated and handed over to the residents by President NWWA (Southern Region).  Last, but not the least, a wheel barrow was also gifted to the ladies of the village, who otherwise carry heavy items such as gas cylinders over the bridge with great difficulty, and which would become easier for them now onwards.

During the interaction, an issue with regard to movement of patients across the bridge was projected by the residents, to which a stretcher and wheelchair was spontaneously promised by the C-in-C. The Navy will continue with its rehabilitation efforts by also sponsoring the roof renewal of five houses, which will be completed before the onset of monsoons.
