SNC Mountaineering Expedition to Mt Menthosa (6443 M)

A team of 12 aspiring mountaineers, consisting of five officers and seven sailors, will be embarking on the maiden mountaineering expedition to Mt Menthosa (6443 metres) - the second highest peak in the Lahaul-Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh. The first team to climb this peak was a British team led by Capt S Bembrose in 1970.

The peak is located in Mayar valley of Lahaul-Spiti. It is a difficult and challenging peak to climb due to its remote location and demands great endurance and skill to conquer. The route to the summit comprises deep valleys, gorges cut by the Mayar river, moraines, rock faces, cliffs, ice fields and ice walls. The expedition will be long and tricky with a huge plateau to traverse and steep drops on both sides at some places.

The expedition team was flagged off by Chief of Staff, Rear Admiral R J Nadkarni, VSM from the Naval Base, Kochi on 21 September 2018. The team members are from various units of Southern Naval Command and are being led by Lt Cdr Shivesh Kumar Sanam of INS Sarvekshak. The team will be reaching Delhi on 24 September 2018, where final inspection of technical gear and stores  will be undertaken. The team then departs by road to Urgos in Himachal Pradesh via Manali and Rohtang pass, from where the trek begins.
