Inspector General Nuclear Safety (IGNS)

Vice Admiral Soonil Bhokare was commissioned into the Indian Navy on  01 Jan 1984. He joined the Submarine Arm in 1986. He was deputed to Riga (USSR) for Submarine Training and was the commissioning crew of INS Sindhuratna. He has served as Navigating Officer onboard five submarines and has been Executive Officer of three submarines.  

He has commanded three frontline submarines of the Indian Navy namely INS Sindhughosh, Sindhudhvaj and Sindhushastra and a guided missile Frigate, INS Beas.

His other tenures include Command of the Submarine Squadrons as COMCOS (West) and INS Vajrabahu and Chief Staff Officer (Operations) at Headquarters, Eastern Naval Command.

He attended the Defence Services Staff Course (Wellington), Army Higher Command Course in Army War College, Mhow and Defence and Strategic Studies Course in Australian Defence College, Canberra.

As a Flag Officer he has served as Flag Officer Submarines and Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet.  On promotion to the rank of Vice Admiral he served as Commandant, Indian Naval Academy prior taking over as IGNS.

He is married to Mrs Meena and they have a daughter who is currently working with the Taj Group of Hotels in Mumbai.  The Flag Officer enjoys playing golf and is an avid reader.
