Platform Design

Platform Design

Submarines are one of the most complex engineering platforms requiring integration of numerous technologically advanced systems in a constrained space. DND (SDG) is the only organization in the country having proficiency in submarine design.

Staff Requirements are the basis for any design. Design spiral has five distinct stages, viz., feasibility studies, concept design, sketch design, technical design which finally culminates in workshop design. While major equipment and long lead items which determine form and architecture are selected at the initial stages, other equipments are integrated progressively.

Design Environment

Advanced IT tools, such as, 3D Computer Aided Design – Product Lifecycle Management (CAD-PLM) are customized to design the complex platform. Schematics developed by the system specialists are integrated in this 3D CAD-PLM environment. Composite layout analysis is carried out to extract interference-free workshop drawings for execution by yard.

Concurrent Design and Engineering

Concurrent design and engineering has been one of the major thrust areas to meet the timelines of the Projects. Integration of new systems in a submarine which is in advanced stages of construction is also analysed in a composite 3D environment ensuring minimal rework by shipyard.

Detailed Design

DND (SDG) is the sole organisation in the country capable of undertaking detailed design for production of a submarine. The expertise has been acquired over a period of time through its involvement in design of various submarine programmes.
