Navy Day 2015 Celebrations-Open Sea Swimming Competition

In run up to Navy Day, an Open Sea Swimming Competition – 2015 (OSSC-15) is scheduled on 17 Nov 15 at the Indian Naval Watermanship Training Centre (INWTC), Near Afghan Church, Colaba, Mumbai. The race will be conducted from Port Hand Buoy near Prongs Reef outside Mumbai Harbour to the landing jetty of Indian Naval Watermanship Training Centre (INWTC) Colaba, covering a distance of approx 06 kilometers. The event is open to one and all in service as well as civilian personnel above the age of 14 years. It will be conducted under ten categories. The event will be conducted in accordance with “FEDERATION INTERNATIONALE DE NATION” (FINA) regulations. OSSC-15 website has been launched on internet. The URL address of the site is Organised and promoted by the Indian Navy, it is a sporting event of prestige unequaled amongst the swimming fraternity. It is keenly awaited by long distance swimming enthusiasts who look forward to challenge themselves in the open sea.

The first such competition was organised by the Navy in 1995. It was a modest beginning with only three civilians participating amongst a total of forty one swimmers. However, as the years went by, the number of participants kept increasing. By 1999, the enthusiasm and zeal that the event generated was such, that it soon found a permanent place in the Navy Week celebrations and the event metamorphorised into an All India Open Swimming Competition. In 2000, two new categories of swimmers, namely boys and girls – under sixteen years of age were instituted. Based on the inputs from the participants over the years and recommendations of Swimming Federation of India, this year four new categories have been added. The Veteran category has been separated into Veteran (Men) and Veteran (Women) and the Differently Abled separated into Deaf and Dumb (Men), Deaf and Dumb (Women), Physically Handicapped (Men) and Physically Handicapped (Women).

The Entry form and Indemnity Bond can be downloaded from the website. The last date for receiving these forms along with medical certificate, age proof, previous swimming experience certificate and Handicap certificate (if applicable) is 06 Nov 15.
