Commodore G Prakash has assumed charge as the Commanding Officer of INS Venduruthy and as Station Commander, Kochi on 30 Apr 16. He is the 43rd Commanding Officer of this 73 year old establishment that supports all naval units and activities in and around Kochi.

After initial schooling at Chengannur, Kerala where he was born, he studied at Sainik School Kazhakoottam, Trivandrum before joining the National Defence Academy, at Khadakwasla, near Pune. He is presently a resident of Kandanad, near Tripunithura, Ernakulam.

Commodore G Prakash is an anti-submarine warfare (ASW) specialist aviator who was commissioned into the Navy on 01 Jul 85. He has commanded three naval warships, INS Ajay, Taragiri and Tir besides being the Senior Officer Commanding the First Training Squadron based at Kochi. The officer while commanding INS Taragiri undertook extensive tsunami relief work at Sri Lanka. He has also commanded three shore establishments, INS Mandovi - a training base at Goa, INS Dega, the naval air station at Visakhapatnam and the Maritime Warfare Centre at Kochi.

His important staff appointments include Joint Director Naval Aviation Plans and Joint Director Strategy Concepts and Transformation at NHQ, Delhi, as well as being in charge of Aviation at Headquarters Eastern Naval Command, Visakhapatnam .

He is an alumnus of the prestigious Defence Services Staff College (DSSC), Wellington and the College of Naval Warfare (CNW), Mumbai. An M Phil in Defence and Strategic Studies, he is a regular lecturer at various institutions within the armed forces and several civilian institutions on a variety of topics.  

Commodore G Prakash has replaced Commodore P Suresh, who has retired from the Navy after 35 years of active service.
