Water Garbage Scooper Launched by Southern Naval Command, Kochi
As part of the ongoing efforts by Southern Naval Command (SNC) towards environmental protection an eco-friendly ‘Water Garbage Scooper’ (WGS) was launched at naval base, Kochi on 02 August 2019. A demonstration of the platform was witnessed by Vice Admiral AK Chawla, AVSM, NM, VSM, the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, SNC and other naval personnel.
This innovative platform has been entirely designed and manufactured inhouse - using available items of scrap – at Naval Ship Repair Yard (NSRY) of SNC. A number of trials were carried out to establish its proper functioning and safe operation, before it was formally commissioned. The WGS consists of a floating platform with a scooper, which can be propelled over the water surface to collect floating garbage such as plastic bottles and thermocol. The scooper dumps the garbage into a collection tray, which can be subsequently emptied on shore.
The WGS is a zero emission platform, and has been equipped with all the basic controls i.e. paddlewheel and rudder to manoeuvre in shallow waters and narrow channels. The operator sits atop a modified bicycle seat, controls the paddlewheel through a pedal and chain mechanism and the steering using the bicycle handle. This platform would further enhance clean up drive of the “Venduruthy channel” - which was launched by SNC in June - many folds.
The FOC-in-C congratulated the entire team of NSRY involved in the project for their initiative and efforts towards designing and constructing this Water Garbage Scooper.
