Vice Admiral Sunil Lanba, AVSM took over as the Vice Chief of Naval Staff (VCNS) on 02 Jun 2014. An alumnus of National Defence Academy, he has done his schooling from Mayo College, Ajmer. The Admiral was commissioned in the Executive Branch of the Indian Navy in January 1978.

A Navigation and Direction specialist, he has served as Navigating Officer on board INS Sindhudurg (Corvette) and INS Dunagiri (Frigate). The Admiral has commanded minesweeper INS Kakinada, frigate INS Himgiri and guided missile destroyers INS Ranvijay and INS Mumbai. He has been the Fleet Operations officer of the Western Fleet.

The Admiral is a post graduate in Defence and Management Studies and is also an alumnus of Royal College of Defence Studies, London. 

On being elevated to Flag rank, the officer has served as Chief of Staff, Southern Naval Command, Flag Officer Sea Training (FOST) and Flag Officer Commanding Maharashtra and Gujarat Naval Area (FOMAG). On promotion to rank of Vice Admiral he was appointed as Chief of Staff Headquarters Eastern Naval Command. Prior to assuming charge as Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, he was Commandant of National Defence College, New Delhi since Nov 12.

For his distinguished service of an exceptionally high order, he was awarded Ati Vishist Seva Medal in 2011.

He is married to Mrs Reena Lanba who is a qualified teacher but has been a home maker since past few years. They have two daughters and one son.
