PO 'Q' Met Course Passing Out Parade Held at SNOM

The maiden Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) course was conducted at School of Naval Oceanology and Meteorology. NWP is a method of generating weather forecast using computer simulations. A dedicated lab was set up for conduct of the course with high end computing systems, networks, soundproof atmosphere and modern training aids. Four specialist Met officers, one from each Command of the Indian Navy, attended the course, which was aimed to train the officers in installation of a Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, pre-processing, processing and post-processing of model data, including data assimilation. The officers were also trained on visualisation tools such as Grads and Python. In addition, guest lectures by NWP trained officers from Indian Naval Meteorological Analysis Centre, professors form Cochin University of Science and Technology and a scientist from Space Application Centre, Ahmedabad were conducted. Commanding Officer INS Garuda, the chief guest for the valedictory function, presented certificates to officers on completing the NWP on 15 June 2019. During the event, ‘Diploma in Meteorology’ certificates were also awarded to 17 sailors who had qualified PO 'Q' Met course since 2014.
