Ninth Edition of Admiral’s Cup Regatta with Largest Participation Gets Underway at INA

The ninth edition of Admiral’s Cup Sailing Regatta 2018 got underway at Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala on 02 December 2018 with Commandant, INA Vice Admiral RB Pandit, AVSM, inaugurating the event at an impressive ceremony on the Ettikulam Bay.

The ninth edition of Admiral’s Cup Sailing Regatta 2018, has participation from 30 foreign teams comprising Australia, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Egypt, France, Germany, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nigeria, Oman, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Singapore, South Africa,              Sri Lanka, UAE, UK, USA and Vietnam. Team from Vietnam is participating as observer for the event. In addition, two teams from India, Indian Naval Academy and National Defence Academy, Khadakvasla will make the Admiral’s Cup Regatta 2018 have the distinction for the highest number of participating countries in the world for any military sailing competitive event.

The Admiral's Cup sailing regatta is conducted in Laser Radial Sailing boats with races scheduled over next four days commencing 03 December 2018 at Ettikulam Bay. The races are divided into Initial Series and Final Series. All teams will initially sail in six races whilst formed up in two groups with one boat of each country placed in each group. On completion of initial series, the top half of each group will form the gold fleet and sail four races in the final series. All races sailed in the initial and final series will count for the overall series positions.

The ‘Admiral’s Cup’ and the ‘Runners Up Cup’ will be awarded to the top two teams in the championship on the basis of the combined performance of both boats. In addition, individual medals will also be awarded in the men’s and women’s category. The Admiral’s Cup Sailing Regatta 2017 was won by the team from USA Naval Academy. The event has become very popular since its inception in 2010 and this year’s regatta is expected to be more exciting and keenly fought with the highest ever number of countries participating in the event with first time participation by Bulgaria and Iran.
