National Science Day Celebrationsat NSTL Visakhapatnam
Naval Science & Technological Laboratory (NSTL), the premier naval research laboratory of Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO), Visakhapatnam celebrated National Science Day on 01 Mar 2021 at Mohapatra Manasi Auditorium. National Science Day is observed every year on February 28, to mark and celebrate invention of ‘Raman Effect’ by Sir C.V.Raman on 28 Feb 1928.
Floral tributes were offered to the portrait of Sir CV Raman by the Chief Guest Dr. G.A.Ramadass, Director, National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, Chennai, Dr. Samir V Kamat, Distinguished Scientist & Director General (Naval Systems & Materials)DRDO, Dr. O.R. Nandagopan, Outstanding Scientist & Director NSTL and other dignitaries. Shri C Kedarnath, Scientist ‘G’ & Chairman of the Celebrations Committeegave the welcome address.
Chief Guest Dr. Ramadass delivered an invited talk on “Ocean Research –A Civilian Perspective”.He explained in detail, the work being carried out by NIOT in emerging and futuristic areas of oceanography. He reiterated the commitment of NSTL and NIOT to work together in the field of naval research and appreciated the success of recovery of Varunastra torpedo, which was a challenge met jointly by NIOT and NSTL.
Every year, on this occasion, a Silicon Medal is awarded to scientists for their outstanding work in R&D. This year, Mr. B Suresh Kumar, Scientist-E and Mr. KAnjappa, Scientist ‘B’have been awarded this medal for their work on “Design and Development of FPGA based Shock and Vibration Measurement System”. A Commendation Certificatesigned by Chairman DRDO was also given to the winners of the Silicon Medal.
The Celebrations concluded with the distribution of prizes to the winners of Painting / Essay Writing competitions for school/ college students. Scientists, Officers, Members of NSTL Civil Employees Union, Works Committee;and Staff of NSTL participated in the celebrations.
