MILAN 2018

The 10th edition of Milan concluded with Milan Exercise Sea (MILES), conducted from 11 to 13 March 2018, which saw participation of 20 ships making it the largest multilateral exercise to be conducted in the Andaman Sea. The aim of the exercise was to enhance interoperability between navies of the region and to exchange best practices. Weapon firing, Search and Rescue operations, Air Defence exercises, Cross-deck flying, Boarding Operations and Medical Evacuation drills were conducted during the exercise. A steam past was also conducted with all participating ships passing the Flagship, INS Sahyadri with Vice Admiral Bimal Verma, AVSM, ADC, Commander-in-Chief, Andaman & Nicobar Command embarked, for man and cheer ship.

MILES 2018 - Exercise

The Sea Phase of Milan Exercise Sea (MILES) is being conducted from 11 to 13 March 2018, off the coast of Andaman & Nicobar Islands. 20 ships from nine nations including India are participating in MILES-2018. The foreign ships participating in the exercise include, HMAS Larrakia of Australia, BNS Dhaleshwari of Bangladesh, KRI Cut Nyak Dien and Lemadang of Indonesia, KD Lekiu of Malaysia, UMS Inlay and King Sin Phyu Shin of Myanmar, RSS Dauntless of Singapore, SLNS Samudura and Suranimala of Sri Lanka and HTMS Narathiwat of Thailand. The Indian ships participating in the exercise include INS Sahyadri, Jyoti, Kirch, Kulish, Saryu, Kesari, Baratang and Bangaram and INLCU L51. The aim of the exercise is to enhance interoperability between navies of the region and to exchange best practices. A series of exercises have been planned, which include Search and Rescue, Visit Board Search and Seize, Casualty Evacuation, Anti Air Tracking, Surface Gun Firing, practice approaches for Replenishment at Sea, close manoeuvring of Fleet formations, helicopter operations and high-speed boat operations.

MILES 2018 - Conference

The Milan Exercise Sea Phase (MILES) commenced on 08 March 2018 at Port Blair with conduct of an operational conference between the planning staffs of participating countries. A total of 17 ships from nine participating nations including India are participating in MILES-2018, which will be conducted at sea off Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The aim of the exercise is to enhance interoperability between navies of the region and to exchange best practices. A series of exercises have been planned at sea, which include Search and Rescue, Visit Board Search and Seize, Casualty Evacuation, Anti Air Tracking, Surface Gun Firing, practice approaches for Replenishment at Sea, close manoeuvring of Fleet formations, helicopter operations and high-speed boat operations.

Residents of Port Blair Treated to a Spectacular Military Display - International City Parade

As part of Milan 2018 an International City Parade was conducted on 09 March 2018 at Marina Park, Port Blair. The parade showcased the motto of Milan 'Friendship Across the Seas' as school children, Marine Commandos, Para Jumpers, marching contingents and cultural troops stole the hearts and minds of the spectators. Admiral DK Joshi, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, VSM, NM (Retd), Hon'ble Lieutenant Governor, Andaman & Nicobar Islands reviewed the parade, which was witnessed by the local population, crew of visiting ships and foreign delegates. The parade showcased flag trooping, formation flypast, skydiving and motorcycle display by the Dare Devil team, followed by marching contingents from the three Services and Indian Coast Guard and contingents from Australia, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand. The Andaman & Nicobar Police and National Cadet Corps also paraded their contingents. Ceremonial bands of the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Andaman & Nicobar Police enthralled the audience with martial music. Tableaus from Andaman & Nicobar Command, Forest Department and Directorate of Shipping Services as also cultural performance by school children added grandeur to the spectacle. The Indian Navy and Indian Air Force Continuity Drill contingent drew applause from the spectators with their precise and heart-stopping moves. The spectacle came to a close with the lowering of the National Flag with the Indian Navy Band performing the sunset ceremony synchronised with illumination of naval ships at anchorage and fireworks.

MILAN 2018 - CNS Interaction

As part of Milan 2018, Admiral Sunil Lanba, PVSM, AVSM, ADC Chief of the Naval Staff interacted with media personnel at a Press Conference on 08 March 2018 at Port Blair. Over 50 media personnel both from national and local media attended the press conference alongwith delegates from the participating nations. The CNS also unveiled the Milan plaque on the occasion and interacted with delegates on completion of the press conference.

MILAN 2018 - Table Top Exercise

As part of Milan 18, a Table Top Exercise titled ‘Broad Sword’, on the theme 'Enhancing Regional Cooperation for Combating Unlawful Activities at Sea', was conducted on 08 March 2018 at Port Blair. Delegates from all 16 participating navies including the Indian Navy participated in the exercise. The aim of the exercise was to enable the participating navies of the region to undertake joint planning towards confidence building and improving inter-operability in dealing with present day problems of piracy, gun and drug running and illegal migration. The delegates were grouped in four syndicates and given specific situations to respond to and formulate joint plans. The lessons learnt from the exercise will help in improving inter-operability and to arrive at Standard Operating Procedures.

MILAN 2018 - Reception for the Visiting Delegates of the Participating Countries

MILAN 2018 - Foreign Warships Open for School Children

Over 300 children from six schools and 100 NCC cadets visited foreign warships participating in Milan 2018 on 07 March 2018 at Port Blair. The aim of the visit was to provide an opportunity to the students to interact with uniformed personnel from foreign navies. The students were conducted onboard in small groups and were briefed on the role and capabilities of the ship.

MILAN 18 - International Maritime Seminar

As part of MILAN 18, an International Maritime Seminar themed 'In pursuit of Maritime Good Order - Need for Comprehensive Importance Sharing Apparatus' was conducted on 07 March 2018 at Port Blair. The speakers at the seminar deliberated upon various issues to evolve best practices for multilateral cooperation towards strengthening of maritime good order in the Indian Ocean Region. Vice Admiral Bimal Verma, AVSM, ADC, Commander-in-Chief, Andaman and Nicobar Command, delivered the inaugural address at the seminar, which was attended by delegates from 16 participating navies. Vice Admiral Pradeep Chauhan, AVSM & Bar, VSM (Retd), Director National Maritime Foundation delivered the keynote address.

MILAN 2018 - Band Concert

A band concert was organised for the visiting foreign delegates and participants of MILAN 2018 on 06 March 2018 at Port Blair. The Hon'ble Lieutenant Governor, Andaman and Nicobar, Admiral DK Joshi, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, VSM, NM (Retd) was the chief guest for the event. Vice Admiral Bimal Verma, AVSM, ADC, Commander-in-Chief, Andaman & Nicobar Command and dignitaries from the Armed Forces and Civil Administration also attended the event. The Indian Navy and Indian Army bands rendered a wide repertoire comprising martial music, arrangements of symphonies, overtures, concertos, Indian classical music, and a host of other forms of contemporary genres, including pop and folk music. Commander Satish Champion, a licentiate in Military music, was at the helm as the chief composer.

MILAN 2018 at Port Blair

The 10th edition of MILAN commenced with arrival of 11 foreign warships at Port Blair on 06 March 2018. The ships of participating countries from Asia Pacific and Indian Ocean Regions, namely Australia, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand were escorted into the harbour by Indian Naval Ships Baratang and Bangaram and Fast Interceptor Craft of the Indian Navy. The ships were accorded a ceremonial reception by senior officers from the Andaman and Nicobar Command with Indian Navy and Indian Army bands in attendance. This biennial congregation of friendly navies will see participation of 39 delegates from 16 countries, making it the largest gathering since its inception in 1995.
