ENC Golden Jubilee Maritime Seminar Concludes

The Eastern Naval Command Golden Jubilee Seminar with the theme “National Maritime Power - Concepts, Constituents and Catalysts”, concluded on 23 August 2017. The two-day seminar is jointly hosted by ENC in partnership with the National Maritime Foundation (NMF) was inaugurated at Samudrika Auditorium Visakhapatnam on 22 August 2017 by Admiral Sunil Lanba, PVSM, AVSM, ADC  Chief of the Naval Staff. In the Inaugural session, the welcome address was delivered by Vice Admiral HCS Bisht, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command and Admiral RK Dhowan (Retd), former Navy Chief delivered the inaugural address. The Chief Guest for the event, Admiral Sunil Lanba, Chief of the Naval Staff, delivered the keynote address. The first day of the seminar saw distinguished speakers sharing their perspectives on “India as a Resurgent Maritime Power”, “Maritime Economics, Infrastructure and Maritime Environment”, “Maritime Security and Safety” and “Regional Maritime Dynamics”.

Second day of the seminar started with Session four on “Regional Maritime Dynamics”. The session was chaired by Vice Admiral Satish Soni (Retd). The first speaker, Additional Director General VSR Murthy of the Indian Coast Guard deliberated upon issues such as transnational crimes, threats impinging on blue economy vision of India and approach towards marine environment protection. The second speaker Commander Prakash Gopal elaborated upon India’s imperatives in furthering constructive maritime engagement in the Indo – Pacific Region. This was followed by Captain SS Parmar, speaking on balance of power, concepts of power transition and freedom of navigation.

The proceedings of the seminar were summed up eloquently by Vice Admiral Pradeep Chauhan (Retd), Director, National Maritime Foundation. The valedictory address was given by Admiral Arun Prakash (Retd), former Navy Chief, who treated the subject in a very holistic  manner, bringing out the issues and challenges in our maritime domain and proposed a way ahead towards becoming a stronger maritime power.

ENC Golden Jubilee Maritime Seminar Concludes

The seminar had a total of eighteen speakers from the academia and strategic studies, practitioners from the Indian Navy and Coast Guard, shipping and the scientific community. Prof Brahma Chellaney and Commodore Uday Bhaskar (Retd) provided a very good overview of the environment and set the stage for the two day seminar. The seminar saw a balanced mix of argument and debate, and resulted in animated discussions, providing a very comprehensive update and way ahead, not only to harness our maritime power but to strengthen it in the current security environment. Achieving its envisaged objectives over the last two days, the seminar concluded successfully enriching all the participants from the Navy, Coast Guard, academia, public sector, government and the scientific community.
