INHS Nivarini was commissioned as 30 bedded hospital on 03 Oct 1980, to provide hospital services to Basic Training Establishment, Chilka. It got expanded to its present bed capacity of 72 in the year 1991. It is pertinent to mention that INHS Nivarini is the only service hospital in the state of Orissa.
The foundation stone of the hospital was laid by VAdm Hari Lal Sharma AVSM, the then FOC-in-C, Eastern Naval Command. The work was completed in two phases and the building was handed over to users on 03 Jun 1980. It was commissioned on 03 Oct 1980 by Surg RAdm G Kuppuswamy, VSM, Senior consultant in Medicine in the Office of DGAFMS.

The hospital has been built mainly as a single building on a sprawling 19 acres of land and has celebrated the Silver Jubilee on 03 Oct 2005. Power back-up facility, i.e generator supply is available for the entire hospital in the event of power failure. Centralised A/C supply is provided to the OT, Heat Stroke Room, Emergency treatment room and Labour Room.
Apart from the basic role of the hospital of providing medical cover and specialist facilities for recruitment and training related activities , the hospital, being the only service hospital in the entire state of Orissa, has a pivotal role to play in the health care delivery to ex-servicemen and other defense establishments of Orissa. The hospital provides referral hospital services to the following establishments: -
(a) Army AD College Gopalpur.
(b) 120 TA Bn, NCC Bn.
(c) Recruiting organizations in Orissa (Army, Navy and Air Force).
(d) Coast Guard personnel and their families.
This hospital also provides : -
(a) ECHS cover to all ex-servicemen and their dependants in the state of Orissa through polyclinics at Bhubaneswar, Berhampur and Balasore.
(b) Aid to Civil authorities during natural calamities and disaster situations
At present the hospital has the following specialities:-

A few of the achievements of this hospital in the recent past are enumerated below:-
Creation of Intensive Care Unit
A four bedded intensive care unit had been projected in AWP 2006-07 as per authorization in accordance with Scales of Accommodation for Armed Forces Hospitals 2003. The project got Sanctioned at a cost of Rs.54,67,620/- and commenced on 21 Apr 08. The project was completed in Mar 09. The state-of-the-art infrastructural of ICU was inaugurated by RAdm HCS Bisht, Chief of Staff, Headquarters, Southern Naval Command, on 29 Apr 09.

The following medical camps were organized in the year 2010: -
(a) Health Camp
INHS Nivarini organized a Health Camp at Barkul High School on 07 Mar 10. The camp was inaugurated by the Station Commander Chilka Cmde MVS Kumar, VSM in the presence of Commanding Officer INHS Nivarini Surgeon Captain AK Naik and medical camp team. The primary objective of the camp was to provide free medical checkup in Gynaecology cases, Eye and General medicine. There was an overwhelming response for the camp from the nearby villages.

A total number of 210 patients were examined and also issued with the required essential medicines by Indian Naval Hospital Ship Nivarini. The evaluated cases of cataract and other Eye diseases were undertaken for surgery at Nivarini Hospital free of cost.
(b) Blood Donation Camp
A blood donation camp was organized at INHS Nivarini on 02 Apr 10. The camp was inaugurated by the Station Commander Chilka Cmde MVS Kumar, VSM in the presence of Commanding Officer INHS Nivarini Surgeon Captain AK Naik. A total no. of 100 volunteers donated blood.

(c) Medical Camp at Puri
A medical camp was conducted at Puri on 13 Jul 10 during Car Festival of Lord Jagannath to provide medical services to the devotees. Approx 500 individuals were provided medical Care support during the medical camp.
