INSTITUTE OF NAVAL MEDICINE

Institute
of Naval Medicine was established at Mumbai in 1966
with the aim of imparting specialized training to
naval personnel and also to conduct medical research
for problems peculiar to Navy. The Institute functions
under a Director with a number of training, research
and other miscellaneous departments. The main
divisions include, The School of Naval Medicine where
medical officers of Indian navy are trained on initial
induction to Navy and also specialized training is
imparted to Submarine medical officers and Marine
Medicine specialists. There are courses specifically
catering for imparting diving medicine for army and
foreign trainees as well. The school also conducts
specialized research into medical problems related to
higher barometric pressures, submarine microclimate
and utilize the expertise thus achieved for offering
treatment with hyperbaric oxygen therapy. The school
conducts a Diploma course in Marine Medicine on behalf
of Mumbai University

The School of Medical Assistants essentially
imparts standardized professional and specialists training
to the medical assistants of the Navy. A School of Naval
health assists in training as well as research pertaining to
maritime medicine, ergonomics of ships and habitability and
nutritional problems peculiar to sailors. The Institute also
caters to the Nursing Training of probationary nurses.

To assist the various functions, the Institute
has a well-established medical reference library,
specialized photographic section, physiological
laboratory and a naval aviation medicine cell.
