INHS Nivarini is a 72 bedded secondary care hospital located on the shores of the famous Lake Chilka. The hospital
was commissioned on 03 Oct 80 by SURG RADM G KUPPUSWAMY,VSM senior consultant in
Medicine, Ministry of Defence
Since its commissioning the hospital has been growing
from strength to strength.
Apart from the basic role of the hospital of providing
medical cover and specialist facilities for recruitment
and training related activities , the hospital, being
the only service hospital in Orissa, has a pivotal role
to play in the health care delivery to ex-servicemen and
other defence establishments of Orissa. The Army Air
Defence College at Gopalpur-at-sea has a section
hospital which also depends on INHS Nivarini for all
specialist consultations.
At present the hospital has the following specialities:-
• Medicine
• Surgery
• Gynaecology
• Anaesthesia
• Ophthalmology
• Dental Surgery
The hospital has also played an important role in
undertaking outreach programmes and providing succor to
those affected by Natural Calamities in this impecunious
state.
A few of the achievements of this hospital in the recent
past are enumerated below:-
Medical Camps
Regular medical camps are being conducted by the
hospital for the local civil population which has
inadequate access to the health care facilities. In the
year 2003-04, health camps were conducted at Nehru Seva
Sangh Orphanage and Salia dam village.
A health camp is being planned at Parikud, a
neighbouring village across lake Chilka in the month of
Aug 2004

Cataract Surgery Camp – Nivarini
Aid to Civil Power
Medical teams have been dispatched as and when requested
by civil authorities. The floods of 2003 saw two teams
of this hospital doing relief work which was well
appreciated by the administrative authorities.

Blood Donation Camp
In order to encourage donation of blood amongst the
naval personnel, blood donation camps are held yearly in
association with Red Cross blood bank Bhubaneshwar. This
year a blood donation camp was organized on 18 Apr 04 at
INHS Nivarini under the aegis of Indian Red Cross
Society for the benefit of thalassaemic children. There
was an overwhelming response with 13 officers,03
officers’families,15 sailors and families and 60
trainees donating blood.
