INTEGRATED HEADQUARTERS OF MINISTRY OF DEFENCE (NAVY)
RELIEF ASSISTANCE PROVIDED BY INDIAN NAVY
As of today a total of 16 ships, 8 helicopters and 4 fixed wing aircraft of the Indian Navy are engaged in the Tsunami rehabilitation operations. In addition, the naval bases located near the Tsunami hit areas have been rendering immense contribution towards expediting the process of restoring normalcy. Over 2500 Indian Naval personnel are committed to these operations.
Andaman & Nicobar Islands (Op SEA WAVES)
IN Ships LCU 38, and LCU 34, with relief stores for Kamorta embarked, undertook beach survey off Katchal, Tarasa and Campbell Bay.
IN LCU 36, disembarked relief stores at Hut Bay.
INS Tillangchang, at Nancowry, is continuing with relief efforts.
INS Cheetah, assisted / monitored the relief operations at Hut Bay.
INS Sandhayak (with Chetak helecopter), off Carnicobar, embarked personnel from DG Light House and carried out repairs of Keating Point light house.
INS Darshak (with Chetak), assisting the Survey of India for carrying survey of the Northern Group of Islands, has completed check survey of Diglipur and set up a tidal camp. It observations revealed no major changes and the bathymetry to be in general agreement with existing navigational chart.
Assistance to Sri Lanka (Op RAINBOW)
INS Taragiri is coordinating the relief activities ashore at Galle. The Medical Officer and the Medical Assistant of the ship have been attached to the medical camp at Closenberg Hotel. 207 patients have been examined.Galle
The Indian Army engineers assisted in restoration of essential services at Rejipura and Telavatha. 13 open wells were cleaned and chlorinated.
Colombo
INS Sarvekshak has completed setting up of the DGPS station and reported commencement of tidal observations in KKS harbour. Sounding operation of breakwater area and outer harbour, harbour survey by side scanning, coast-lining of the area, extension of ground control and fixing of conspicuous objects and buoys has been completed. Side scanning in the breakwater area and diving for locating under water obstructions is in progress.
ICGS Samar handed over relief supplies to the Health Minister of Sri Lanka. Disembarkation of the relief material is in progress.
Trincomalee
INS Jamuna continues to be at Trincomalee for providing medical treatment and to coordinate relief operations. 124 patients were treated at Kuchiveli and another 192 in Sambalthivu camp. Recharging of 11 wells was carried out.Aircraft Detachment The Dornier aircraft operating from Colombo had carried out two sorties for ferrying 420 kgs of relief material to China Bay and 650 kgs of relief supplies to Vavuniya, Trincomalee. The Defence Correspondents of the Sunday Times and two officers of Sri Lankan Civil Supplies department also took passage on the aircraft.
Medical Teams The medical teams deployed at Batticaloa and Ampara were moved to Colombo for de-induction by ICGS Samar / INS Sutlej as the District Administration indicated that the normalcy has been restored in the area.
Relief Assistance to Maldives (Op CASTOR)
The ship embarked 40 Tons of relief material at Male military anchorage and disembarked relief material at Kolhamandulu atoll on 17 Jan 05. Approximately 10 tons of relief material comprising packaged water, food, utensils and blankets were disembarked.ICGS Vigraha and one Dornier aircraft continues to be deployed in Maldives to support relief operations at various islands.
Indonesia (Op GAMBHIR)
(Hospital Ship) with Chetak helecopter, off Meulaboh (Indonesia), delivered about 20 tons of relief material to the Indonesian authorities. The ship’s medical teams attended 1710 patients and carried out three surgeries onboard.INS Nirupak
