RELIEF ASSISTANCE PROVIDED BY INDIAN NAVY

UPDATE - 02 JAN 05

 

At 0900 h today, 02 Jan 05, the forces committed by the Navy for relief operations are 31 ships, 20 helicopters, 4 Dornier/Islander aircraft and more than 5500 personnel. In addition, many hundreds of Naval personnel from Naval bases viz, INS Rajali, INS Dega, INS Circars, INS Kattabomman, INS Adyar, NAS Ramnad  and INS Venduruthy continue to be  associated with relief / medical assistance in the affected areas of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.  

Andaman & Nicobar Islands (Op SEA WAVES)

INS Jyoti is deployed off the Andaman & Nicobar Islands for providing the essential stores and fuel for the naval ships deployed in relief operations to enhance their endurance. INS Sandhayak is being redeployed to the Southern Group of A&N Islands.  The ship will be carrying relief material including desalination and water purifying plants along with portable generator sets. The plants with captive power supply could be installed in different islands for generation of pure drinking water.  Five portable diesel generators (Make-M/s Kirloskar Oil Engines Ltd, Pune) are being embarked onboard INS Sandhayak at Chennai for transshipment to Port Blair. INS Darshak is being deployed to the Southern Group of A&N islands for survey activities and supply of relief stores. INS Nirdeshak, (Hospital Ship) ex-WNC, is being deployed to Southern Group of A&N Islands and will be calling at Chennai enroute for OTR. 

Little Andaman  

INS Trinkat with relief supplies and police personnel embarked onboard is proceeding to Hut Bay.  LCU 39 evacuated 153 personnel from Hut Bay to Port Blair. 

Kamorta Group

Chowra. INS Magar has commenced evacuation operation of Chowra Island. Police sources have indicated that approx 1250 people are staying in a small piece of elevated land as 65% land is still inundated. The stranded personnel are being shifted to Tarassa Island. About 500 kg of food packets / provisions were supplied by the Seaking helicopter.

Katchall.  INS Rajput landed approximately 3.5 tons of relief supplies on the island. 

Tarassa  Island. INS Tillanchang had disembarked 70 bags of provisions to the Island.

Campbell Bay. INS Rajput is providing relief to Campbell Bay for about 500 personnel. INS Gharial with relief supplies embarked is also providing relief atCampbell Bay. 

East Coast (Op MADAD)

Tamil Nadu Coast.  The diving operations by IN Diving Team to clear obstructions in Chennai port are continuing. 

Nagapattinam. IN Ships Ranjit and Khanjar continued to operate relief camps at Nagapattinam.  The Medical Camp at Velankanni Church 19 km South of Nagapattinam is continuing.  Medical Camps have been set up at Neela Dathi, Vasavi Kalyan Mandapam and Nago Durgah by the Navy. A total of 350 patients have been treated and many more with serious open wounds in large numbers are still awaiting medical attention. Ship’s helicopters have been tasked for relief ops /stores transfer off Nagapattinam. As requested by local people, diving assistance is planned to commence on 02 Jan in Vellar River to extricate dead bodies.

Kanyakumari.  INS Kattabomman (Naval Base) continued to operate relief camps in Kottilpadu and Kollachel villages of Kanyakumari district. 

West Coast (Kerala)

Shertallai, Alleppey.  One medical team continues to be deployed at Taluka Hospital Shertallai, (Alleppey) for relief operations. The team treated approximately 150 patients.  

Assistance to Sri Lanka (Op RAINBOW)

Galle 

INS Sutlej continues to be deployed off Galle for diving/survey/relief/harbour clearance operations. The High Commissioner of India and a team of reporters from CNN visited the ship on 01 Jan 05. 

Diving Team. A diving team comprising one officer, nine divers and two Gemini craft is being employed at Galle for continuing the salvage and debris clearance work in the harbour. One sunken FRP boat and one fishing trawler have been cleared.  Besides, the berthing area next to the 140 m jetty has been surveyed for underwater obstructions and confirmed to be clear.

One 10 KVA generator has been operationalised ashore.

IN Ships Jamuna (Hospital Ship) and Sarvekshak (Survey Ship) with relief supplies, medical teams and Army composite team (81 Army personnel from Engineers, Signals and Medical Corps)  arrived at Galle on 01 Jan. The Army composite team from INS Sarvekshak has been deployed at Boossa.

Medical Camps.  One medical team airlifted from Kochi continues to be  employed with Sri Lankan Army Military Engineering Regiment in Embilipitiya near Hambantota and are attending to casualties since PM 26 Dec 04.

Aircraft Detachment. An aircraft detachment comprising one Dornier and one Islander aircraft continues to be deployed at Ratmalana Airbase near Colombo since 30 Dec 04.  The aircraft were employed for following relief operations :-

INS Aditya deployed for Op CASTOR in Maldives was diverted to Sri Lanka for providing logistics support for Op RAINBOW.  The ship disembarked six Medical Officers, 11 Medical Assistants and 1000 kg of medicines at Colombo.   The Medical Team is planned to be deployed at Batticaloa on 02 Jan.    

CGS Samar with relief supplies is proceeding to Colombo and is expected to arrive today. The ship is also carrying a helicopter onboard.

Trincomalee

IN Ship LCU 33, on arrival at Trincomalee, handed over the following relief supplies :-

INS Kirch (Corvette) embarked with relief supplies has also arrived at Trincomalee.  One team of three officers and 25 sailors have been deployed at SL Naval Base at Nilaveli and a medical team of three Medical Officers and ten Medical assistants deployed at Kiniya Government Hospital.  These teams have also facilitated relocation of hospital to alternative site near the affected areas.

INS Ghorpad (Landing Ship Tank) loaded with medical and relief supplies embarked onboard arrived at Trincomalee.  The ship’s medical team carried out relief ops at Muttur and treated 300 patients. Hygiene chemicals are being distributed to prevent out break of water borne diseases. 

Relief Assistance to Maldives (Op CASTOR)

INS Mysore continued relief ops in Maldives and undertook the following relief operations:-

Gan Island.   Medical stores were supplied to the island by ship’s helicopter.

Kalhaidoo Island.   One defective generator was repaired and operationalised on the island.  Full power supply has been restored in the island.Medical treatment was given to 15 people by ship’s Medical Team and Chlorine was supplied to the island for water purification. About 60-70 inhabitants remained at night with others being transported to Gan Island for safety.

Mundoo Island.  One defective generator and distribution line was repaired and operationalised. The ship also supplied provisions and undertook medical treatment of 45 people.

Maabihdoo Island.   One defective generator was repaired and operationalised. The ship also supplied provisions and undertook medical treatment of 25 people.

Dhabidoo Island.  One 48 and one 32 KW generators repaired by a ship’s team.  Full power supply has been restored. The ship also supplied rations and set up a medical care centre. 

Ishdoo Island. Reconstruction work is in progress. All sick persons have been evacuated. Emergency supplies of food, medical supplies and blankets were airlifted. 

Indonesia (Op GAMBHIR)

INS Nirupak with relief supplies and medical stores embarked is on her way to Indonesia.  Meanwhile, the balance items (approximately 22 tonnes), as requested by the Govt of Indonesia, have been loaded onboard INS Khukri at Chennai. The ship has sailed from Chennai for Indonesia on 01 Jan 05.
