Instructions to the Ships

             Port Blair is named after Lieutenant Archibald Blair who, in 1789, discovered the tremendous potential of this natural harbour. This extended land locked harbour is well protected round the year.

 

Port Limits

            The limits of the Port Blair harbour comprise all waters westward of a line from North Point to Northern tip of Ross Island and onward to South Point. The Port is Divided into inner and outer harbours, the Chatham Island acts as the dividing line.

Entrance to Harbour

                There are two entrances to the Harbour. North and South of Ross Island. The Northern entrance with depths upto 56 mts ,being wider and deeper, is recommended for use.  The entrance is between North Point (11° 42’ N 95° 45’.5 E)  and Ross Island Lt  which is 1.5 miles to its South.

  Chatham Signal Station

Text Box: Pilotage
 Pilotage is compulsory for visiting foreign ships, both for entering and leaving Port Blair Harbour. When entering harbour, Pilot will embark the ship in position 280 Ross Lt 11.4 cables.  
 
Speed Restriction 
         Ships are to maintain speeds of less than 8 knots within port limits. Port authorities have laid down this mandatory stipulation to avoid damage to small vessels and ferry crafts berthed alongside.
  
Communication
      
      The Port Signal Station operates a VHF service with call sign “PORT CONTROL” on MMB Channel 16.
 
Berthing
                        Details of various berths available at Port Blair are as follows:- 
(a)       Haddo Wharf  A 585 mts concrete wharf with water fuel and crane facilities is located at Haddo, South West of Chatham Island. The Southern part of the wharf is for use by Naval Ships. Merchant ships are usually berthed in the Northern part. The orientation of the wharf is 040-220 and alongside depth is 10 mts. A 20 tons shore crane is available on jetty. The details of wharf I-V from South to North are as follows :- 
            (i)     Wharf I    -   Berthing Face 180 Mtrs, Draught 9 mtrs
            (ii)    Wharf II  -   Berthing Face 225 Mtrs, Draught 9 mtrs
            (iii)   Wharf III-   Berthing Face 150 Mtrs, Draught 9 mtrs
            (iv)    Wharf IV -   Berthing Face 135 Mtrs, Draught 9 mtrs
            (v)     Wharf V   -   Berthing Face 135 Mtrs, Draught 5 mtrs
 (b)      Chatham Wharf  This is a 220 mts long concrete jetty with a 103-283 orientation. Ships upto 6 mts draught can be berthed alongside this jetty.     
               (c)      Naval Wharf. Naval ships are normally berthed at Naval Wharf (Southern part of Haddo wharf). This  wharf is further divided into five berths A to E starting from South to               	North.

Meteorological Information 

            The Naval Meteorology Office issues local weather forecasts for sea areas upto 100 NM from Port Blair. Weather forecasts for the A&N islands are also issued by this office everyday (valid for 24 hrs from 1400 hrs). At Port Blair, the month of January is generally pleasant with very little rain. The average temperature varies between 19 and 26 degrees centigrade. The sea state during this period is expected to be calm. The latest satellite picture depicting the weather in Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal and temperature data at Port Blair is available on the website www.imd.gov.in
